Essential Tips for the Lares Trek
How to Prepare for the Journey
Before you lace up your boots, here is how to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip:
Acclimatize First: Altitude is the biggest challenge. We strongly recommend spending at least 2–3 days in Cusco before starting the trek to let your body adjust to the thin air.
Layer Up: The Andes are famous for «four seasons in one day.» Pack moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece, and a waterproof jacket. A good pair of broken-in hiking boots is essential!
Fuel Your Body: We provide delicious meals, but carrying your own high-energy snacks (nuts, chocolate, energy bars) and staying hydrated with purified water is key to keeping your energy up.
Be a Responsible Traveler: We are guests in these remote communities. Please ask for permission before taking photos of locals and consider buying handmade textiles to support their economy directly.
Train Your Body: While the Lares Trek is often considered less technical than the Classic Inca Trail, it involves high passes and long days. Regular cardio exercise in the weeks before your trip will make a huge difference.
Short Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Lares Hot Springs – Quiswarani Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to the famous Lares Hot Springs. After a relaxing soak in the medicinal waters, we begin our trek. We hike up to the village of Cuncani, immersing ourselves in local traditions, before finishing the day at our campsite in Quiswarani, surrounded by towering peaks and starry skies.
Day 2: Quiswarani – Pachacuteq Pass – Cancha Cancha Wake up early for the most challenging and rewarding day! We climb to the Pachacuteq Pass, the highest point of the trek. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and turquoise lakes. We then descend into the isolated village of Cancha Cancha, one of the few communities with no road access, where we camp for the night.
Day 3: Cancha Cancha – Huaran – Salt Mines – Ollantaytambo We complete our Lares trek with a descent into the lush Sacred Valley, arriving at Huaran. From here, private transport takes us to the spectacular Maras Salt Mines to see thousands of ancient salt pools. We end the day in the living Inca city of Ollantaytambo, where we spend the night in a comfortable hotel, preparing for the Inca Trail tomorrow.
Day 4: The Short Inca Trail (Km 104) – Sun Gate – Aguas Calientes Today, we step onto history! We take the train to Km 104 and begin the Short Inca Trail. You will hike past the ruins of Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna before the ultimate highlight: walking through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for your first, unforgettable view of Machu Picchu. We then descend to Aguas Calientes for a relaxing evening in a hotel.
Day 5: The Lost City of Machu Picchu – Cusco The Grand Finale. We take the morning bus back up to the citadel for a comprehensive guided tour of Machu Picchu, exploring its temples, terraces, and secrets. After soaking in the magic, we return to Ollantaytambo by train and drive you back to Cusco, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
Detailed Itinerary: 5-Day Lares & Short Inca Trail
Day 1: Hot Springs, High Passes & Heartwarming Culture
Route: Cusco – Lares Hot Springs – Cuncani – Quiswarani Campsite
A Scenic Start & Local Flavors
Your adventure begins before dawn! We will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 AM, just as the city of Cusco begins to stir. As we drive into the Sacred Valley, you’ll watch the sunrise illuminate the Andes. Our first stop is the bustling local market in Calca (approx. 1 hour drive). Here, you can stretch your legs and purchase fresh fruits, snacks, or water for the trail—a great chance to see local life in action.
Relax & Recharge
Two hours later, we arrive at the famous Lares Hot Springs. Before the hiking begins, we treat you to a delicious breakfast. Afterward, slip into the natural thermal pools. Rich in minerals, these waters are renowned for soothing muscles, bones, and stress—the perfect way to prepare your body for the trek ahead.
The Trek Begins: Waterfalls & Willkikasa Pass
Feeling refreshed, we meet our dedicated trekking team—chefs and horsemen—at Punta Carretera (3,800m / 12,467ft). You will hand over your duffel bag to be carried by the horses, leaving you light and ready to hike.
The trail immediately impresses with views of the Pacchayocc Waterfall. After a steady two-hour climb, we stop at a picturesque lakeside spot for a freshly prepared lunch. Refueled, we tackle the day’s biggest challenge: the ascent to Willkikasa Pass (4,400m / 14,435ft).
Note: This is the highest point of the day. We will take it slow to manage the altitude, giving you plenty of time to catch your breath and snap photos of the incredible jagged peaks.
Cultural Connection in Quiswarani
From the pass, it is a 1.5-hour descent into the valley of Quiswarani, our home for the night. This isn’t just a campsite; it’s a living community.
Community Visit: You will have time to explore the village and meet the locals. We often visit the local school where children are taught in their native Quechua. If you have brought small gifts (pencils, notebooks, or toys), this is a wonderful moment to share them.
As the sun sets, we gather for «Happy Hour» with hot drinks, followed by a hearty dinner prepared by our chef, before settling into our tents under a sky full of stars.

Day 2: The Challenge of Pachacuteq Pass & The Hidden Valley
Route: Quiswarani – Pachacuteq Pass – Cancha Cancha
The Climb to the Summit
We start the day with a gentle wake-up call at 5:00 AM, accompanied by a hot cup of coca tea delivered right to your tent. After a nutritious breakfast to fuel your muscles, we begin the most challenging—and visually rewarding—part of our trek.
The trail zig-zags steeply uphill for approximately three to four hours. As we climb, the scenery transforms into a dramatic high-alpine landscape of jagged peaks and icy winds. Keep your camera ready; you will pass stunning glacial lakes and likely see herds of alpacas grazing on the steep slopes.
Conquering Pachacuteq Pass
Our goal is Pachacuteq Pass, towering at 4,700 m (15,420 ft). Reaching the summit is a true achievement! From this vantage point, you are treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Urubamba mountain range, including the snow-capped Pitusiray and Sahuasiray peaks.
Celebration: We will take a moment at the top to celebrate with hot tea provided by our team, soaking in the view before we start the descent.
Lunch with a View & The Descent
Leaving the pass behind, we descend for about an hour to a scenic glacial lake, where our chef will have a hot lunch waiting. There is nothing quite like a gourmet meal in the middle of the wilderness to recharge your spirit.
Arrival in Cancha Cancha
The final leg of the day is a two-hour descent into the valley of Cancha Cancha (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). This village is unique—it is one of the most isolated communities in the region, completely inaccessible by road. Here, traditional stone houses with thatched roofs dot the landscape, and life continues much as it did centuries ago.
We set up camp near the village. In the evening, you will have the chance to meet local families and learn about their daily lives, including their renowned weaving skills. We end the day with a well-deserved dinner and a restful night’s sleep.

Day 3: From High Peaks to Ancient Salt & Living History
Route: Cancha Cancha – Huaran – Maras Salt Mines – Ollantaytambo
The Descent into the Sacred Valley
Today offers a welcome change of pace and scenery! After a final breakfast in the high mountains, we bid farewell to the villagers of Cancha Cancha. We begin a relaxed, four-hour descent following the path of the crystal-clear Cancha Cancha River.
As we lose altitude, watch the landscape dramatically transform. The rugged, rocky alpine terrain gives way to the warmer, lush vegetation of the Sacred Valley. You will hike past fields of corn, quinoa, and potatoes, witnessing traditional farming life firsthand. Our trek on foot officially ends in the charming village of Huaran (2,700 m / 8,858 ft).
A Fond Farewell & Local Lunch
At Huaran, we say goodbye to our incredible trekking support team—the horsemen and chef who have looked after us so well. We then board our private van for a short drive through the valley to enjoy a fresh, healthy lunch at a local restaurant.
The Maras Salt Mines
In the afternoon, we visit one of Peru’s most photogenic sites: the Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras). Imagine over 3,000 white salt pools carved into the steep canyon wall, forming a stunning geometric patchwork against the brown earth.
Ancient Engineering: These pools are fed by a natural subterranean saltwater spring and have been harvested by local families since pre-Inca times. It is a fascinating sight and a perfect place to buy unique pink salt souvenirs.
Ollantaytambo: The Living Inca City
We finish the day in Ollantaytambo, a town known as the «Living Inca City» because it has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century. Walking its narrow cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time; you will see original Inca canals still carrying fresh water through the town.
Evening: We check into a comfortable hotel for the night. Enjoy a hot shower and a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant. Rest up well—tomorrow, we step onto the Inca Trail!

Day 4: Walking the Royal Path to the Sun Gate
Route: Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
The Adventure Begins at Km 104
We start with an early breakfast at the hotel to catch the first train from Ollantaytambo. This scenic one-hour ride follows the Urubamba River until we reach Km 104 (2,100 m / 6,889 ft), the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail.
Here, we step off the train and onto history. After passing the checkpoint, our first stop is the archaeological site of Chachabamba, an ancient Incan shrine used to worship the river and mountains.
The Climb to «Forever Young»
For the next three hours, we hike a steady uphill path surrounded by lush cloud forest vegetation. You will likely see orchids and hummingbirds along the way. The trail eventually leads us to a spectacular waterfall and the ruins of Wiñay Wayna («Forever Young») at 2,650 m (8,694 ft).
The Best Lunch Spot: These steep, magnificent terraces are considered by many to be the most beautiful ruins on the entire Inca Trail. We will stop here to enjoy a delicious box lunch while soaking in the history and the views.
The Sun Gate: A Moment of Awe
After lunch, we continue for one more hour along the stone-paved trail to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at 2,720 m (8,923 ft). This is the moment you have been waiting for. Unlike train travelers who arrive at the bottom of the canyon, you will enter Machu Picchu from above, seeing the citadel reveal itself through the ancient stone archway.
Sunset Views & Descent
We take our time at the Sun Gate to enjoy the panoramic views and snap incredible photos as the afternoon light casts long shadows over the ruins. We then descend the final 45 minutes to the main entrance of Machu Picchu.
Note: We won’t tour the ruins today (we save that for tomorrow morning when you are fresh!). Instead, we catch the bus down to Aguas Calientes, check into our hotel, and enjoy a celebratory dinner at a local restaurant.

Gear Up: Your Essential Packing Guide
Preparing for the Lares Trek
Getting ready for the Lares Trek is almost as exciting as the hike itself! Whether you are a seasoned mountaineer or a first-time Andean explorer, the right gear is the secret to a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable journey.
Because the weather in the Andes can be unpredictable—shifting from warm sunshine to chilly winds in an hour—we have curated this guide to help you pack smart. Here is everything you need to conquer the trail with confidence.
🧥 Clothing: The Art of Layering
The golden rule of trekking in Peru is layering. You need the flexibility to peel off layers when you sweat and bundle up when the sun goes down.
Base Layer (The Moisture Manager): Avoid cotton. Choose synthetic or merino wool tops and bottoms that wick sweat away from your skin to keep you dry.
Mid-Layer (The Insulator): A fleece jacket or a down vest is essential for trapping body heat during lunch stops or cooler sections of the trail.
Outer Layer (The Shield): A high-quality waterproof and windproof rain jacket (and pants) is non-negotiable. It protects you from the elements so you can keep moving comfortably.
Trekking Pants: Opt for lightweight, quick-drying hiking pants that allow full range of motion. Convertible pants (zip-offs) are a great option!
Extremities:
Head: A sun hat for the day and a warm beanie for the mornings/nights.
Hands: Lightweight gloves are a lifesaver for early starts and high passes.
🥾 Footwear: Happy Feet, Happy Hiker
Your feet are your transport; treat them well!
Hiking Boots: Choose waterproof boots with strong ankle support and deep tread (traction) for uneven terrain. Tip: Make sure they are broken in before you arrive!
Camp Shoes: After a long day, you’ll love slipping into a pair of sneakers or sandals to let your feet breathe at the campsite.
The Right Socks: Pack several pairs of specific hiking socks (merino wool is best). Bring more than you think you need—dry feet are blister-free feet.
🎒 Backpack & Gear
A well-organized pack allows you to focus on the views, not the weight on your shoulders.
Daypack: A 25L–30L backpack with adjustable straps and a hip belt is perfect for carrying your daily essentials (water, layers, camera).
Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for stability on steep descents and to reduce strain on your knees by up to 25%.
Sleep System:
Sleeping Bag: Ensure it is rated for at least -10°C (14°F) for freezing Andean nights.
Sleeping Pad: Critical for insulation from the cold ground.
Lighting: A headlamp is essential for hands-free navigation around camp at night or for early morning starts.
Hydration: Bring a durable, reusable water bottle (like Nalgene) or a hydration bladder (CamelBak) to stay hydrated constantly.
🧴 Health, Hygiene & Essentials
Small items that make a big difference in your comfort.
Sun Protection: The UV rays are stronger at high altitude. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and good sunglasses.
First Aid Kit: While guides carry kits, bring a personal mini-kit with blister pads (Moleskin), band-aids, and personal medication (like Ibuprofen).
Hygiene: Toilet paper, wet wipes (for a «mountain shower»), and hand sanitizer are must-haves.
Trekking Towel: A microfiber, quick-drying towel is perfect for washing up or taking a dip in the hot springs.
Insect Repellent: Protect yourself from mosquitoes and biting flies, especially at lower altitudes.
🏔️ Ready to Go?
Packing doesn’t have to be stressful. Focus on lightweight, functional items, and remember: comfort is key. With your gear sorted, you are free to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and culture of the Lares Trek. We can’t wait to see you on the trail!

Prepare for the Hike
Preparation is key to enjoying your trek, both physically and mentally. Engaging in regular exercise leading up to your journey is crucial; focus on cardio and strength-training exercises to build stamina and endurance. Activities such as running, cycling, or hiking shorter trails can significantly enhance your conditioning. Additionally, educating yourself on altitude sickness and its management is essential, as the high elevation can affect even seasoned hikers. Make sure to acclimatize properly and consider discussing preventive measures with a healthcare professional. Packing the right gear is equally important; invest in sturdy hiking boots that provide support and grip, a quality backpack for comfort, and appropriate clothing layers to adapt to the dynamic weather conditions of the Andes. With proper preparation, your adventure will be both memorable and exhilarating.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Guide to the Lares Trek & Short Inca Trail (5 Days)
We know that booking a trek involves a lot of questions. Because this specific itinerary combines the cultural immersion of the Lares Valley with the historic beauty of the Short Inca Trail, the logistics are unique. Here are the answers to the most common questions we receive.
🏔️ Difficulty & Preparation
1. How difficult is this specific 5-day trek?
We rate this trek as Moderate to Challenging.
The Lares Portion (Days 1–3): The challenge here is the altitude. You will hike up to high passes (approx. 4,400m / 14,435ft), but the terrain is generally wider and less steep than the Classic Inca Trail.
The Short Inca Trail Portion (Day 4): The challenge here is the humidity and steps. You will drop into the cloud forest where it is warmer, and you will navigate original Inca stone stairs.
Verdict: You do not need to be an Olympic athlete, but a good level of fitness and cardiovascular endurance is required.
2. How many days should I acclimatize before the trek?
We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco or the Sacred Valley at least 2 to 3 days before your departure. This gives your body time to adjust to the thin air, significantly reducing the risk of altitude sickness and ensuring you enjoy the views rather than struggling for breath.
🎒 Logistics & Luggage (The «Combo» Details)
3. Where do I sleep? Is it all camping?
This is the beauty of this diverse itinerary! You get the best of both worlds:
Days 1 & 2: You will camp in our comfortable 4-season tents in the Lares Valley under the stars.
Day 3: You will stay in a comfortable hostel/hotel in Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley), allowing you to shower and rest in a real bed.
Day 4: You will stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).
4. What happens to my duffel bag on the Short Inca Trail (Day 4)?
This is a very common question.
On Lares (Days 1–3): Horses carry your 5kg duffel bag.
On the Short Inca Trail (Day 4): Horses are not allowed on the Inca Trail. Therefore, your duffel bag will be transported by train/car directly to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. You will only hike with your Daypack (containing water, snacks, sunscreen, and your poncho) on Day 4. You will reunite with your duffel bag at the hotel that evening.
🚽 Hygiene & Comfort
5. Are there bathrooms along the trail?
Lares Section: Public facilities are scarce. We provide a private portable toilet tent for our group at the campsites and lunch spots, ensuring hygiene and privacy.
Short Inca Trail Section: There are government-run flush toilets at the trailhead (KM 104) and at Wiñay Wayna (the halfway point).
6. Can I charge my electronic devices?
During Camping (Days 1–2): There is no electricity. We recommend bringing a high-capacity portable power bank (battery pack) to keep your phone and camera charged.
During Hotel Stays (Days 3–4): Yes, you will have full access to electricity to recharge your gear at the hotels in Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.
🥑 Food & Water
7. I have a dietary restriction. Can you accommodate me?
Absolutely. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, our chefs can craft delicious meals for you. Please just let us know on your booking form.
8. Is the water safe to drink?
We provide boiled and cooled water from the first lunch onwards. You just need to bring enough water for the very first morning of hiking. We recommend filling your reusable bottles at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
🎫 Machu Picchu & Permits
9. Do we see Machu Picchu twice?
Yes! This is a major highlight of this specific 5-day itinerary.
First View: On Day 4, you will arrive at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) in the late afternoon to see Machu Picchu from above. This is often quieter and magical for photos.
The Full Tour: On Day 5, you return by bus for the comprehensive guided walking tour of the citadel.
10. Do I need to book this far in advance?
Yes. While the Lares Trek itself does not require the strict permits of the Classic Inca Trail, the Short Inca Trail (Day 4) does require a permit from the Peruvian government, and these can sell out months in advance. We recommend booking at least 3 to 5 months early.
