The ideal hiking season for the Lares Trek and the Short Inca Trail typically runs from May to September, coinciding with Peru’s dry season. During this period, you can expect clearer skies and more manageable weather conditions, making your trekking experience both enjoyable and safe. The comfortable temperatures create pleasant hiking days, enhancing your ability to soak in the stunning vistas and intricate history of the region. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so early booking is recommended to secure your desired dates. Planning ahead ensures availability and allows you to embark on your adventure with the peace of mind that comes from being well-prepared.

Preparation is key to enjoying your trek, both physically and mentally. Engaging in regular exercise leading up to your journey is crucial; focus on cardio and strength-training exercises to build stamina and endurance. Activities such as running, cycling, or hiking shorter trails can significantly enhance your conditioning. Additionally, educating yourself on altitude sickness and its management is essential, as the high elevation can affect even seasoned hikers. Make sure to acclimatize properly and consider discussing preventive measures with a healthcare professional. Packing the right gear is equally important; invest in sturdy hiking boots that provide support and grip, a quality backpack for comfort, and appropriate clothing layers to adapt to the dynamic weather conditions of the Andes. With proper preparation, your adventure will be both memorable and exhilarating.

The Lares Trek and Short Inca Trail are considered moderate in difficulty, making them suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. While altitudes can present challenges, the well-maintained paths coupled with the expertise of knowledgeable guides significantly ease the journey. As you navigate the trails, you can expect a harmonious blend of gradual climbs and descents, punctuated by occasional steep sections that will test your stamina. Embrace the challenge, and you will not only conquer the trek but also create lasting memories in one of the world’s most stunning environments.

One of the most enriching aspects of the Lares Trek is the opportunity to explore diverse Andean communities. As you hike along the trail, you’ll encounter welcoming local artisans who showcase their vibrant crafts, offering a fascinating glimpse into their traditions. Witnessing traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations is a humbling experience, as you appreciate the skill and artistry involved in creating each piece.

Additionally, participating in a Q’ente ceremony allows you to engage with local customs, deepening your connection to the thriving culture in these remote valleys. These cultural exchanges not only foster a greater appreciation for Peruvian heritage but also create lasting memories that extend beyond the physical trek, enriching your journey in ways that surpass mere sightseeing. Each interaction transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of stories, traditions, and shared experiences.

The Lares Trek unveils an array of flora and fauna unique to the Andean region, inviting hikers to explore a rich ecological tapestry. As you navigate the diverse terrains, be prepared to encounter vibrant wildflowers such as the delicate chuño and the striking cantuta, the national flower of Peru, both of which highlight the stunning colour palette of the highlands. Among the resilient vegetation, quinoa plants stand out, showcasing their adaptability to the harsh mountain climate while serving as a vital source of sustenance for local communities.

Moreover, keep an eye out for the majestic Andean condor soaring gracefully overhead, its wings spanning nearly ten feet, symbolizing freedom and grace in this breathtaking landscape. You might also spot the charming llamas and alpacas, roaming freely and playing a significant role in Andean culture, both as pack animals and sources of wool. This remarkable biodiversity not only enriches the trekking experience but also deepens your appreciation for the interconnectedness of life thriving amidst the rugged beauty of the Andes.

Practicing sustainable travel is essential while trekking through this pristine area. Opt for guides and tour operators who prioritize eco-friendly practices and respect local communities, ensuring that your adventure contributes positively to the environment and its people. By choosing local businesses, you not only support the economy but also foster meaningful relationships with the communities you pass through. Adhere to «Leave No Trace» principles to minimize your impact on nature, such as avoiding the picking of plants and disposing of waste responsibly. These small actions can have a significant effect on preserving the stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems of the Lares region, allowing future generations to enjoy its beauty. By trekking mindfully, you become an integral part of the ongoing conservation efforts that protect this breathtaking natural wonder.

Your Guide to the Lares Trek & Short Inca Trail (5 Days)

We know that booking a trek involves a lot of questions. Because this specific itinerary combines the cultural immersion of the Lares Valley with the historic beauty of the Short Inca Trail, the logistics are unique. Here are the answers to the most common questions we receive.

🏔️ Difficulty & Preparation

1. How difficult is this specific 5-day trek?

We rate this trek as Moderate to Challenging.

  • The Lares Portion (Days 1–3): The challenge here is the altitude. You will hike up to high passes (approx. 4,400m / 14,435ft), but the terrain is generally wider and less steep than the Classic Inca Trail.

  • The Short Inca Trail Portion (Day 4): The challenge here is the humidity and steps. You will drop into the cloud forest where it is warmer, and you will navigate original Inca stone stairs.

  • Verdict: You do not need to be an Olympic athlete, but a good level of fitness and cardiovascular endurance is required.

2. How many days should I acclimatize before the trek?

We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco or the Sacred Valley at least 2 to 3 days before your departure. This gives your body time to adjust to the thin air, significantly reducing the risk of altitude sickness and ensuring you enjoy the views rather than struggling for breath.

🎒 Logistics & Luggage (The «Combo» Details)

3. Where do I sleep? Is it all camping?

This is the beauty of this diverse itinerary! You get the best of both worlds:

  • Days 1 & 2: You will camp in our comfortable 4-season tents in the Lares Valley under the stars.

  • Day 3: You will stay in a comfortable hostel/hotel in Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley), allowing you to shower and rest in a real bed.

  • Day 4: You will stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).

4. What happens to my duffel bag on the Short Inca Trail (Day 4)?

This is a very common question.

  • On Lares (Days 1–3): Horses carry your 5kg duffel bag.

  • On the Short Inca Trail (Day 4): Horses are not allowed on the Inca Trail. Therefore, your duffel bag will be transported by train/car directly to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. You will only hike with your Daypack (containing water, snacks, sunscreen, and your poncho) on Day 4. You will reunite with your duffel bag at the hotel that evening.

🚽 Hygiene & Comfort

5. Are there bathrooms along the trail?

  • Lares Section: Public facilities are scarce. We provide a private portable toilet tent for our group at the campsites and lunch spots, ensuring hygiene and privacy.

  • Short Inca Trail Section: There are government-run flush toilets at the trailhead (KM 104) and at Wiñay Wayna (the halfway point).

6. Can I charge my electronic devices?

  • During Camping (Days 1–2): There is no electricity. We recommend bringing a high-capacity portable power bank (battery pack) to keep your phone and camera charged.

  • During Hotel Stays (Days 3–4): Yes, you will have full access to electricity to recharge your gear at the hotels in Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.

🥑 Food & Water

7. I have a dietary restriction. Can you accommodate me?

Absolutely. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, our chefs can craft delicious meals for you. Please just let us know on your booking form.

8. Is the water safe to drink?

We provide boiled and cooled water from the first lunch onwards. You just need to bring enough water for the very first morning of hiking. We recommend filling your reusable bottles at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

🎫 Machu Picchu & Permits

9. Do we see Machu Picchu twice?

Yes! This is a major highlight of this specific 5-day itinerary.

  • First View: On Day 4, you will arrive at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) in the late afternoon to see Machu Picchu from above. This is often quieter and magical for photos.

  • The Full Tour: On Day 5, you return by bus for the comprehensive guided walking tour of the citadel.

10. Do I need to book this far in advance?

Yes. While the Lares Trek itself does not require the strict permits of the Classic Inca Trail, the Short Inca Trail (Day 4) does require a permit from the Peruvian government, and these can sell out months in advance. We recommend booking at least 3 to 5 months early.
